The real polluters

'Starting today will index the emissions of 60,000 container ships, tankers, cargo ships, cruise ships and ferries. Each ship will receive an energy efficiency rating ranging from A to G, based on data from International Maritime Organisation (IMO), that is similar to the energy ratings commonly seen on household appliances.

The industry's reliance on low-grade fuel oil also results in the release of a massive amount of pollutants other than carbon dioxide. A 2009 study found that one large container ship emits as much sulfur and particulates as 50 million automobiles.'
