Reichenbach Falls

Anybody who has read the Sherlock Holmes stories will have heard of the Reichenbach Falls. When  Sir Arthur Conan Doyle became tired of writing about Holmes he tried to kill him off by having him die in a fight with Professor Moriarty at Reichenbach Falls . Doyle's plan did not work. The demand for Holmes stories was so great that Doyle had to bring him back to life [it turned out that only Moriarty had died].

The Falls are near the Swiss town of Meiringen. You can take a funicular up to the Falls and look at the actual place where a fictional character didn't really die.

Meiringen cheekily makes a lot of the Sherlock Holmes connection. There is a Sherlock Holmes hotel, a Sherlock Holmes bar, a Sherlock Holmes museum [Yes, really. Don't ask me what is in it], and even a statue of Sherlock Holmes.
