Picking up the bangbang

These Chinese migrant labourers are referred to as bangbang men. The bangbang is the bamboo stick. They sling one of these over their shoulder and carry whatever anybody will pay them to carry. They are some of the worse paid workers in the world, earning about $1.50 for twelve hours work.

We don’t have to pick up the bangbang because we live in the West. At least we don’t just yet. Just give globalisation a little more time and some of us might have to pick up the bangbang.
