A peace to end peace

A peace to end peace,” commented Sir Alfred Milner, that powerhouse of the British war cabinet, as he surveyed the disastrous terms of the WW1 Versailles treaty.  I was reminded of Milner's observation when I heard this piece of news.

The BBC reports that "An Iraqi judicial committee has issued an arrest warrant for the mainly Shia Arab country's Sunni Arab Vice-President, Tariq al-Hashemi.

The warrant was issued under anti-terrorism laws, interior ministry spokesman Adel Daham said.

The main Sunni political bloc is reported to have said it will boycott the cabinet in response."

This has got to be very bad news. It is bad if Tariq al-Hashemi has been correctly accused of terrorism.  It is bad  if he has been falsley accused.

It is less than 48 hours since the Americans claimed they had set up an workable government and pulled out of Iraq.

So much for their peace.

Still, that's the nice thing about being a giant clumsy bully.  You can completely ruin a country and then just wander off, tootling your trumpet and singing patriotic songs.
