The real polluters

'Starting today shipefficiency.org will index the emissions of 60,000 container ships, tankers, cargo ships, cruise ships and ferries. Each ship will receive an energy efficiency rating ranging from A to G, based on data from International Maritime Organisation (IMO), that is similar to the energy ratings commonly seen on household appliances.

The industry's reliance on low-grade fuel oil also results in the release of a massive amount of pollutants other than carbon dioxide. A 2009 study found that one large container ship emits as much sulfur and particulates as 50 million automobiles.'
