Journalists, Assange and envy

It is interesting to see how many journalists have reacted to the Wikileaks cable disclosures.

A lot of them [male and female] appear to be suffering acute envy. They have rushed to condemn Assange as everything from a traitor to a publicity hound. And, maybe [smear, smear] a rapist.

It all sounds a bit sour, though not untypical of the breed.

The slyer ones have been more oblique in their condemnation.

Damn with faint praise, assent with civil leer,
And without sneering, teach the rest to sneer;
Willing to wound, and yet afraid to strike,
Just hint a fault, and hesitate dislike;

Why don't they do investigative journalism like this?  After all, they are professional journalists, Assange is not.  Why are they so useless?

Probably they were too busy recycling press releases or expounding their half-baked opinions.

They didn't have any time for real journalism, though they sure resent it when Wikileaks does their work for them.
